“Are you keeping up with what’s happening with Harry and Meghan, and the Royal Family?” A friend asked me this morning over coffee.
“No… well, kind of… It’s hard not to, seeing as it’s being shoved in your face.”
“Yeah that’s true, I just walked past a book display on the way here.”
Whether we have an opinion or are indifferent, whether we have read into it or not, EVERYONE knows something about Harry and Meghan, with discussions being had left, right and centre about them.
Regardless of your thoughts, here are the facts:
- The Guardian reported that Netflix stated on 13 December that the Harry and Meghan documentary “racked up more viewing time on the streaming service than any other documentary during its first week”[1].
- After the book’s official release Tuesday, 400,000 copies have been sold so far across hardback, e-book and audio formats, Transworld Penguin Random House said, citing British sales figures [2].
- The book ranks as a best-seller on Amazon websites worldwide [2].
As individuals either trying to build a personal brand or a business, we can actually learn a thing or two. Here are a few of my thoughts to ponder on:
- Controversy sells – I wrote another article on this here
- Build up your audience and brand before your major release
- Talk about personal things people might raise an eyebrow about
- Put something (or someone) recognisable front and centre. In this case, it was Harry’s face on the book but this works for posts, YouTube thumbnails etc and with ‘hijacking’ audiences of people more influential than yourself. More on this coming soon.
- Strategise for multiple big releases across different forms of media. We can help you out with that through our launch strategies.
- Hint ahead of releases at big things coming, scandals, and comments to keep people hooked on social media.
- Timing matters – hooking your content on controversial/timely news is essential (like this article for example)
- Have a strong and emotive backstory – perfect for your ‘About’ page
