If you want to build a personal brand but don’t know where to start, here is what you need to do.

Who actually are you?

The great thing is you aren’t starting from zero.

You are already a person with hobbies, feelings, thoughts, opinions, a personality.

The biggest part of a personal brand is the personal part, it’s about showing up with authenticity and showcasing yourself in a way that is relatable.

However, some people take this too far…

What should you include?

If you are indeed passionate about your business, and/or it’s purpose, and/or the target clients have traits similar to yours, there will likely be an overlap between who you are and your business.

For example

Mindy has a nutrition business selling green smoothie mixes.

Her Instagram stories often showcase her drinking her green smoothies, having healthy breakfasts, going to the gym, being outdoors in the sunshine, playing with her kids.

All of these things are relevant to her target audience and to her company but are still very much about what Mindy is doing day to day.

It helps her audience build a better picture of who Mindy is and what she stands for, and depicts the high energy, healthy lifestyle that her target audience is going for

What Mindy does NOT do…

Mindy loves having a drink and going ‘out out’, however, she does not post these nights out on her stories. Whilst she might look great and she wants to showcase that she is a regular relatable person, it is not relevant to her audience, and it doesn’t convey her brand message.

HOWEVER, it’s not as black and white as that…

For example

Now if she was smart, she could post the next morning with her green smoothies, and the caption reads ‘turns out these are great for hangovers too’… and then she hits a pain point which some of her target audience might be experiencing.

But before we even think about content

If Mindy’s social media didn’t accurately portray her brand, was a mess of colours, and she didn’t do a great job of talking about what she sold, she could do all the perfectly aligned posts she wanted and she would never make any sales…
